IJN Chiyoda launched as a protected cruiser but after improvements in 1898 was classified as a 3rd class armored cruiser. Chiyoda had an armor belt which very few protected cruisers had. they mostly had an armored protective deck over vital areas of the ship which led to them being called protected cruisers. after a long and successful career in the IJN, Chiyoda was sunk as a target vessel.
