789D and 789D XQ Off-Highway Truck Air System and Brakes: Electronic Control Module (Brake)

Location of the Brake Electronic Control Module
The Brake Electronic Control Module (Brake ECM) is the main component in the brake electrical system. The Brake ECM is located in the compartment at the rear of the cab. The Brake ECM has several input signals and output signals. Refer to Illustration 1 for the input signals and the output signals.
The Brake ECM controls the Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) and the Traction Control System (TCS) functions. The Brake ECM receives information from various input components that are listed in Illustration 1. The Brake ECM uses this information in order to determine if the service and retarder brakes should engage for the ARC or the parking and secondary brakes for the TCS. The output components are then activated in order to apply the ARC or the TCS.
The Brake ECM also monitors input signals from the rear axle system.
The Cat Data Link is used to share information with other systems such as the Power Train Electronic Control Module, the Engine Electronic Control Module, and the Vital Information Management System.

Air Compressor

(1) Air compressor governor(2) Air compressor
Air compressor (2) is driven by the timing gear on the front of the engine. The air compressor is lubricated by the lubrication system for the engine. The air compressor is cooled by the engine cooling system. Air for the air compressor comes from the engine air inlet manifold.
Air compressor governor (1) is mounted on air compressor (2). Air compressor governor (1) is connected to the air dryer.

Air Tank

Primary air tank
The primary air tank is located on the left-hand side below the cab. The primary air tank contains pressurized air for control of the following systems and components: the air starting system, the service brakes, the automatic lubrication system, the horn and the retarder.
The primary air tank contains a relief valve. This relief valve cannot be adjusted.
Secondary air tank

The secondary air tank is located in the compartment that is located behind the cab. A cover must be removed in order to access the secondary air tank. The secondary air tank contains pressurized air for the secondary braking circuit.

Location of the drain valve for the primary air tank

Location of the drain valve for the secondary air tank

Each air tank contains a drain valve. The drain valve for the primary air tank is on the primary air tank. The drain for the secondary air tank is on the right side of the cab.
