the USS Holland SS-1 was the USN's first submarine. commissioned in 1900 she was 53ft. 10in. long with a 45hp gasoline engine running a generator to power a 75hp electric motor for underwater operation. armed with one 18in. torpedo tube and a dynamite gun Holland was able to cruise on the surface at 8kts. and underwater at 5. in the background is one of the new steel navy's obsolete monitors. the man popping out of the submarine hatch is John Phillip Holland the designer of the Holland Submarines. the British Royal Navy among others also used Holland Submarines.
