here is a picture of Daniel C. Stillson inventor of the Stillson or pipe wrench patent #95744 October 12, 1869. Daniel was a steam engineer in the USN during the Civil War. after the war he went to work for J.J. Walworth and Co. where he invented the wrench. as you can see from the pictures it has changed little from that day to this. mainly the metallurgy is much improved. the next picture is Daniel's own wrench and the bottom is an ad from the Walworth Co. i still have my Grandpaw's old Stillson wrench. a 36" one, it's been around since before i was born so it's at least 68 now. works as good as it ever did too.
