the Zenith motorcycle with Gradua infinite gear change was very advanced for the day. the crank handle above the tank was rotated counter clockwise for a higher gear and speed and clockwise for lower. it basically squeezed or opened the forward belt pulley while at the same time moving the rear wheel fore or aft a little to maintain proper belt tension. at one time they were banned from racing since they gave quite an advantage over other early machines without gears or clutches. an early Zenith slogan said, "Built of finest quality throughout. We employ no female labor". apparently this changed when women acquired the vote. with the large JAP v-twin Zeniths were quite fast for the day.
