Some of these grounded spaceships can cost as much as $45,000. Matsushita Hisashi, editor of Customer Scooter magazine, said: "This tendency appeared in the second half of the 1990s and it has been growing ever since.
"A comedy star of Japanese television, George Tokoro, was one of the first to ride a tuned scooter. Prior to that, scooters were associated with older folk." Hisashi said the type of people buying the bikes vary, but hover between mechanics, delivery drivers and "lots of girls".
