797B Off-Highway Truck: Chassis Electronic Control System

Block Diagram of the Chassis Electronic Control System
The ECM controls the hoist. The ECM energizes the solenoids that are used to control the raising and lowering of the body. This is done with information from both the operator and the machine.
The ECM reads the value of the shift lever. The ECM uses the value of the shift lever along with other machine conditions in order to instruct the Transmission ECM on the requested gear of the machine.
The ECM controls the neutral start function. This function is used in order to activate the starter. The starter will activate when certain machine conditions have been met.
For machines so equipped, the ECM controls the charging of the steering accumulators. The ECM uses the steering pressure sensor and the steering charging solenoid to keep the steering accumulators at the proper pressure range.
The ECM controls the activation of the accumulator bleed function. This function is used to remove pressure from the steering and braking accumulators after the machine is shut down.
The ECM determines if the backup alarm should sound.
The ECM also monitors other components and makes the information available to the VIMS. The following is a list of these inputs:

  • Hoist Screen Pressure Switch
  • Case Drain Hydraulic Filter Switch
  • R Terminal Input from electrical charging system
The chassis ECM also provides the service technician with enhanced diagnostic capabilities. This is available through the use of onboard memory. Onboard memory stores the possible diagnostic codes for retrieval at the time of service. Service personnel should use the Electronic Technician service tool (ET) for troubleshooting.
The following modules communicate with each other through the CAT Data Link: the engine electronic control modules, the transmission ECM, the monitoring system, the brake/cooling ECM and the chassis ECM. Communication between the electronic controls allows the sensors of each system to share information.
