769D Off-Highway Truck: Relief Valve (Steering Cylinder) - Test & Front Axle - Install and Adjust

Table 1
Tools Needed    Qty
7X-0871 Tee    2
6V-3965 Nipple    2
198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator    1
198-4239 Pressure Sensor    1
3S-6224 Electric Hydraulic Pump    1

(1) Steering metering pump
(2) Hydraulic hose to the left steering cylinder(3) Hydraulic hose to the right steering cylinder

Steering metering pump (1) is located behind a cover at the front of the cab.

  1. Operate the engine at HI IDLE. Turn the steering wheel to the right or turn the steering wheel to the left until the steering cylinder stop is reached. Then continue turning the steering wheel against the stop. Hold the steering wheel in this position for three seconds and then release the steering wheel. Continue this step until the oil in the steering system reaches at least 38 °C (100 °F).

  1. In order to test the steering cylinder relief valve for the left steering cylinder, turn the steering wheel to the left until the wheels stop turning. Stop the engine.

  1. Remove hydraulic hose (2) to the left steering cylinder.

  1. Install two 7X-0871 Tees onto the fitting on steering metering pump (1). Connect hydraulic hose (2) onto the second Tee.

  1. Install two 6V-3965 Nipples onto the two Tees.

  1. Connect the 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator with a 198-4239 Pressure Sensor onto one nipple.

  1. Connect a 3S-6224 Electric Hydraulic Pump onto the other nipple assembly.

  1. Operate the pump and check the pressure on the gauge. The pressure setting of the steering cylinder relief valve is 27200 kPa (3945 psi).Note: The pressure setting of the steering cylinder relief valve should not be adjusted. If the pressure setting of the steering cylinder relief valve is not correct, replace the steering metering pump.

  1. Remove the tools and connect hydraulic hose (2) onto steering metering pump (1) .

  1. Start the engine.

  1. In order to test the steering cylinder relief valve for the right steering cylinder, turn the steering wheel to the right until the wheels stop turning. Stop the engine.

  1. Remove hydraulic hose (3) to the right steering cylinder. Follow Steps 4 through 8 in order to check the steering cylinder relief valve for the right steering cylinder.

  1. Remove the tools and connect hydraulic hose (3) onto steering metering pump (1) .

Front Axle - Install and Adjust

Table 1
Required Tools
Tool    Part Number    Part Description    Qty
A    1U-7484    Mobile Lifting Crane    1
B    6V-2012    Micrometer Depth Gauge    1

  1. Be sure that the taper of the front suspension cylinder is free of dirt, burrs and foreign material. Position a suitable lifting sling around the axle. Attach the lifting sling to a suitable hoist. Position the axle below the front suspension cylinder.

  1. Apply 4C-5593 Anti-Seize Compound to the taper of front suspension cylinder. Install the axle to the front suspension cylinder. The weight of the axle is 120 kg (265 lb).

  1. The following procedure is used to determine the required amount of shims.

    1. Install plate (22), two bolts (23) and the hard washers so that bolts (23) are opposite of each other, as shown. Tighten bolts (23) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

    1. Use Tool (C) in order to measure the distance between plate (22) and the bottom of the taper on the front suspension cylinder.

    1. Subtract 2.00 ± 0.03 mm (0.0787 ± 0.0012 inch) from the measurement that was determined in Step 3.b. The thickness of shims must be equal to this total dimension.
Note: The thickness of the shims must not be less than 0.635 mm (0.0250 inch).

    1. Install the required thickness of shims (21) that were determined in Step 3.c to the axle. Install plate (22), the hard washers and four bolts (23) to the axle. Tighten bolts (23) to a torque of 680 ± 35 N·m (500 ± 25 lb ft).Note: A clearance of 0.0 - 0.125 mm (0.0000 - 0.0049 inch) should exist between the shims and plate (22) after installation.
