VIMS AND VIMS 3G WITH ADVISOR: OVERVIEW ( 777F / 777F / 793F / 797F/ 993K / VIMS 11.0)

VIMS provides the operator or technician with the ability to select and monitor over 250 machine functions, health statistics, and payload data in real-time to keep Cat equipment performing at peak production levels.

VIMS 3G is the latest VIMS platform which has increased memory and speed with additional communication interfaces.

Understanding how to use VIMS with Advisor to its fullest potential minimizes downtime and makes the operator and the machine more productive. Machines can have Advisor without having VIMS.

Note: Throughout the course, when the term VIMS is used by itself, it refers to the
VIMS System in general, and also applies to the VIMS 3G platform.

Advisor monitors and enables access to the following types of data:
- Machine diagnostics
- Current machine information
- Operator settings
- Machine configuration
- Calibrations and service modes

VIMS with Advisor provides these additional advanced features.
- Event Chronological List
- Totals
- Histograms
- Trends

VIMS 11.0 and VIMS 3G are the two hardware platforms used with VIMS. VIMS 11.0 utilizes a single Electronic Control Module (ECM) with two 70 pin connectors. VIMS 3G utilizes two smaller ECMs, one for main functionality and one for applications such as Payload. Additional memory and communication interfaces are provided with VIMS 3G. VIMS 3G will eventually become the only platform offered.

VIMS 11.0 is used on the following machines.

- 993K, 773F, 775F, and 777F

VIMS 3G is used on the following machines:

- 793F, 795F, and 797F

Reference Summary:
SEBU7794 - Operation and Maintenance Manual, 773F, 775F
RENR8284 -TPMS Systems Operation, 770, 772, 773F, 775F, and 777F
KENR5955 - VIMS Systems Operation, 773F, 773F, 775F, and 777F

VIMS 11.0 utilizes a single Module with two 70 pin connectors. It does not have Ethernet capability and requires an interface module (HIM) to use Broadband radios. It does support the TC900 radio with Minestar.

The Advisor panel (1) and instrument cluster (2) display machine information to the operator.

The ECMs and Advisor communicate over the CAT Data Link (3). The Advisor panel communicates with the instrument cluster over the CAN Data Link (4).

The Main Module (5) receives sensor data from machine ECMs via the CAT Data link. It also communicates with the Application Module (6) and serves as the main communication interface.

The VIMS 3G Application module (6) contains the Truck Payload Monitoring System, and receives data from the strut pressure sensors (7) to generate payload information.

The VIMS Application module also drives the payload monitoring lamp relays, or the optional scoreboard display (8).

The service ports on the 773-777F Off Highway Trucks are located on the panel behind the companion seat.

Power Receptacle (1) - This port provides 12 V power.

ET Service Port (2) - This service port allows service personnel to connect a laptop computer that is equipped with the Electronic Technician (ET). This will allow service personnel to diagnose machine systems and the engine.

TPMS or VIMS Service Port (3) - This port allows service personnel to connect a laptop computer serial port with the software for the VIMS. The cable used is 127-9797. If the computer does not have a serial port, an adapter can be used with a USB port. The current Caterpillar part # is 370-8059. Other adapters may not be compatible.

Product Link Service Port (4) - This port allows an alternate connection to PL321, but only if the software SEA is activated. It is not necessary for Product Link function. However if used, refer to TIBU5131 for possible wiring adjustments needed.

On 793F-797F Trucks, the service ports are located on the panel between the seats on the back wall as shown.

ET Service Port (1)
Power Receptacle (2)

VIMS 3G Service Port (3, 4) - This port allows service personnel to connect a laptop computer Ethernet port and a serial port. An additional service cable is needed for VIMS 3G, part number 305-5528. See SIS for more information on using VIMSpc with VIMS 3G.

A VIMS 3G port (4) is also located at ground level.

On Loaders, the service ports are located above the key switch.
