HMS Thunderer leaving port. an example of the backbone of the battle line the 74 gun ship of the line. these ships were originally a French design which was copied by all the major navies of the world at the time. generally around 160ft. in length and displacing around 1600t. these ships had a crew of around 700. they were powerfully armed with 28-32lb. cannon on the main gundeck. 30-24lb. cannon on the next gun deck and 16-9lb. guns on the upper deck. also carried several carronades on the upper deck. these are all pictures of Royal Navy ships which differed in detail from the French. indeed many of them were French ships captured by the Royal Navy. there exists not a one in the world today.
